A Night on the Town

My husband and I attended the Traditions Ball hosted by the BYU Alumni Association last night. It was quite the affair, with many people dressed in their finery. I haven't shopped for a formal since my senior prom, and that was an ordeal better saved for another day. Along with describing the people-watching.

After going out for dinner (where I was full after the salad), we made it the Alumni House -- I know that it is called something else now, but I am old and can't remember what it is. We had our pictures taken and then Jonathan and I learned how to waltz. We thought we had it down pretty well. You know, the whole box step, hesitation, twinkle thing. But once we got out onto the dance floor, well, something happened to Jonathan. Turns out he is not that great of a dancer! He couldn't remember a step! At first he insisted that it was the music, but really something just happened to him. It's okay, we still had a good time on the dance floor. Especially watching our older fellow alumni dancing... they could really burn up the floor! I am not sure, but they might have graduated when it was still the Academy.

Unfortunately, I inadvertently ruined a lady's night who happened to have the same dress as I did. She didn't take the duplication as well as I did and, after glaring at me as she walked by, skulked in the corner and wouldn't even dance. Her date couldn't convince her, even though she did have a cute red flower in her hair. Eventually I lost sight of her and realized they had left. It seems that some things don't change at BYU, even with the alumni. Competition at dances is still pretty fierce, even right down to what people wear.

I am already over it.

We had a tremendously happy time, and I am glad we went. It was like having a prom many years later at a point in our lives when we could actually enjoy it without all the teenage angst attached with the hairspray and corsages. And with a babysitter.
