Legos, Star Wars and cell phones

So is it just me, or do kids grow up way too fast these days?  Ethan is 10 and half right now and I feel so blessed that he still plays with his Legos and was so excited to watch the Star Wars dvds that his Nanny loaned him the other day.  What really made me smile last night was him staying awake until eleven because he had smuggled some Lego figurines into his bed and was playing with them until he fell asleep.  There is still so much little boy in him that I adore, that I want to protect.  The world wants our kids to grow up much too fast, the shove cynicism into them along with their Flinstone vitamins.

On the other hand, we received a little bit of criticism when we decided to get him a cell phone.  And while I don't blog about this in order to validate our decision or to explain it (since when do I ever do that?), I do think it is wise to remind people to mind their own business.  We don't have a house phone.  No land line.  I was in labor with the baby for approximately a month and a half.  Because of this, Jonathan was taking me to the hospital almost every other day.  Ethan was home alone or with neighbors.  When I went in to have the baby, he was off with family.  We needed to have contact with him.

Since he has had his phone, he has had long text conversations with is Papa.  About what?  About what his stuffed animals, Mousey, Bradley, and Rascal are doing.  What their adventures will be that day. Again, he is so innocent.  I love this quality about him.  I hope and pray that we will always be able to keep him balanced with the innocence and sweetness that is in him and the realities of this world.
